Natural tourmaline has been highly valued since ancient times. The original etymology for tourmaline, toramalli means stone of many colors. Tourmaline was often mistaken for sapphire or spinel before modern gem testing methods.
In Sri Lanka tourmaline was often found in creeks and river beds and has been used for jewelry in India for at least 2000 years. Gorgeous natural uncut tourmalines of gem quality are still highly sought after by collectors and jewellers. Tourmaline from Pakistan is not as abundant as tourmaline from other localities such as Brazil or China but the stones from this locality are known for thier saturation of color.
